Digital writing vs. Digital media
Digital writing is something that you see all over social media even if it is only a few words that are in the caption. The digital writing is what tells people what happened in the pictures or the video. The pictures and videos is what makes digital media. There are times that you will be more engaged in digital media rather than digital writing. I have created my own version of digital media and it is located below.
This video is an introduction of how I would use digital media in my classroom to keep my students engaged and learning even when they are not in the classroom. Using digital media for an introduction is more engaging than just reading something off a piece of paper. There are times that digital media should be used, but there are other times that digital writing should be used. Lawrence states that "digital media and all of its audio and visual components are produced in particular ways to create particular effects" (Lawrence, 2022 p. 116). Digital media is used to persuade, so when you are needing to say facts then they will use digital writing instead of a video. They may include pictures to keep their readers engaged, but they will mainly be focused on the words that they are writing.
This photo from Questline Digital explains when to use digital media and when to use digital writing. I feel like it is easier to use digital writing, but the engagement is higher when there is a video. This engages people who may not have a proper education for reading. In education you will see more video content than written content for elementary students. This helps them to want to learn something new because it is not as difficult as trying to read something they may not understand. If an elementary student is seeing digital writing than there needs to be a picture, so they will better understand what they are looking at. Lawrence states that the crossover between digital media and digital writing "is generally referred to as "multimodal writing"" (Lawrence, 2022 p. 102). This shows that it is important to remember to add different forms of digital media to your writing to keep your audience engaged. The different forms of media can change depending on the audience. This is something to keep in mind as you are creating your own writings and videos.

ReplyDeleteAlly, I agree that sometimes, digital media can be more impactful than digital writing. I especially think that this can be true when working with elementary students. Lawrence (2022) shares, "Our minds respond to motion. We see movement and it captures our attention" (p. 107). I believe that we have to make smart moves in education and sometimes implement what we know is going to grab the attention of our students, such as videos. When thinking about incorporating media in the classroom, Bakkegard (2023) states, "Since you can bring in media that connects to students right now, media can launch more authentic dialogue and help engage all learners." As educators, we know that we must make connections to enhance the learning experience of students. Media can be a great place to increase conversations in the classroom and promote student engagement. As a lower elementary teacher, I liked your idea of creating videos of yourself pronouncing certain words for your students to be able to visualize how those sounds are created. Digital media definitely has a purpose and place in our classrooms.

I absolutely agree that digital media helps with engagement. The inclusion of visual and audio elements adds to the overall appeal of media. This will help to persuade and make your content stand out amongst all of the other digital media that can be found online. Lawrence states that "humans enjoy motion and animation" (2022, p. 173). I am more attentive to professional developments and training videos when there are interesting visual components. To catch the attention of an audience, whether that be strangers online or students in our classroom, it is important to use visual elements within digital writing.
