Social Media use in education
Social media is used in many ways, but it is known to be used for pleasure. Over the years the use has been changing, but people come up with new ways to use it daily. In education you see social media being used to show new methods for students to learn and be engaged. This could be just as a video that is showing what the topic is or it could be another teacher showing teachers a new way to explain a topic. An example video of a teacher explaining a topic is linked below.

This video by Lisa Elaine explains the rules for when to double letters in a word (Lisa Elaine, 2024). This video gives teachers a catchy phrase for the students to remember this rule. Teachers are always looking for ways to come up with new lessons to keep their students engaged and this video is a great example of this. Lawrence states "digital media is done best when it is most damaging to its users and keeps them coming back for more (Lawrence, 2022 p. 36). If a teacher can find an entertaining user that is another teacher then they could find many videos now on TikTok. They can search a hashtag that has something to do with education or teaching and they will find many more videos.
Social media is a great way for schools to share information with parents in a more engaging way. The image above is a screenshot of the Facebook page for Creek View Elementary School. This page is used to share engaging notices, but they also share videos and pictures of some of the students completing activities at school.
Another way that social media can be used in education is through Facebook groups. If a teacher is going through a training or a program to grow in their knowledge of teaching then they can join a group for that program. This group can be used for advice, but it can also be used to ask questions. Once a teacher joins a group for something then it will continue to pop up on their feed. Lawrence states that "algorithms are used to sort posts or content on a user's feed (Lawrence, 2022 p. 81). This is something that everyone that uses social media notices, but it can be very useful when you need one specific topic to pop up on your feed.

Like you mentioned, many schools use social media platforms to connect with the families of students. Lawrence (2022) shares, "Globally, a substantial amount of the world's people are actively using Facebook" (p. 53). With this in mind, I think this is one of the best ways to utilize social media in education because so many families are users of Facebook and it makes communicating important information a little easier on the school and community. However, I also think it is critical to remember that not all families will utilize the platform, and there must still be a plan in place to effectively communicate with those families. When thinking about using social media in the classroom, I agree that it can be a tremendous resource for both teachers and students. Çalışkan (2025) states, "Social media platforms offer rich multimedia content that can support early literacy acquisition, such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and reading comprehension, through engaging and interactive material." With this in mind, I think it is obvious that social media does have a place in the classroom.

Most schools and districts have a very active Facebook page. I have noticed that most also have accounts on Instagram and X, but they do not have as much interaction on those platforms. I find it very interesting how people and organizations decide which platforms they use. Lawrence states, "each of these three sites have core differences that are worth considering in terms of how we will use these tools to reach certain audiences..." (2022, p. 90). I feel like Facebook has currently been the most used platform by parents of current students, but it would be interesting if this dynamic changes as a new generation becomes the parents. Schools know that most parents are more likely to quickly see a Facebook post, rather than read a lengthy email, and they are capitalizing on this to help share information.
